Pretend you're a Casting Director...

and you have the job of casting The Umbrella Academy feature film. Who would you cast?

If you're looking at this post going "Hey Fox! I know not of this Umbrella Academy of which you speak, therefore I am of no use to you" YOU ARE WRONG!

Even if you don't feel like checking under the cut for character descriptions, perhaps you could just suggest to me your favourite underrated actors & actresses of the moment. You know the ones, they are awesome and they've done a few things but they just haven't had that breakthrough film that gets them A-listed yet. Tell me of your Cillian Murphys, your David Wenhams, your Radha Mitchells and so on.

Casting Call for The Umbrella Academy

UNIVERSAL PICTURES in association with DARK HORSE COMICS are holding open auditions for The Umbrella Academy. A tale of a disbanded group of superheroes who reunite after their adolptive father passes away.

Lead Roles:
1. Luther Hargreeves, aka Spaceboy: Male, 30, leader of the Umbrella academy, moral, heroic. Life-saving experimental surgery has given him the body of a gorilla. In the comic he is pictured as blond.
My first thought was Sam Worthington, but since Avatar he's way too overexposed. Who's the next up & coming Sam Worthington?

2. Diego Hargreeves, aka The Kraken: Male, 30, the rebel of the group. Reckless and has a clear rivalry with Luther. Pictured in the comic as blond, physically strong with longish unkempt hair and usually unshaven.
Would be suited to Hugh Jackman ten years ago. Who's the next up & coming Hugh Jackman?

3. Allison Hargreeves, aka The Rumour: Female, 30, beautiful. Went on to have a daughter and marriage after the group disbanded, but it ended badly. Shown in the comic with purple hair.
Was thinking Maggie Gyllenhaal but that's probably just because I want to bang her.

4. Klaus Hargreeves, aka Seance: Male, 30, witty and darkly humourous, he spent his time after the group separated in a mental facility. Shown as lean and blond in the comic.
I can't help thinking that Cillian Murphy would be perfect, but he might be an ethnicity-fail for a guy named Klaus.

5. The Boy, aka Number Five: Male, 10 years old physically but decades older mentally. He travelled forwards in time and aged to an old man alone trying to find his way back. He regressed back to the physical age of ten on his return to the present. Tough minded and no nonsense. Shown as, well, a ten year old boy. Dark hair.
This is the only casting opinion of mine I feel confident about - Kodi Smit-McPhee. He has the most amazing solemn, intelligent presence for someone so young.

6. Vanya Hargreeves, aka The White Violin: Female, 30, the most estranged member of the group. Spent her life being told by the Academy's Father Figure that there was nothing special about her & wrote a damning book about the Academy. Goes on to become the darker character of The White Violin. Shown as a brunette & a knockout in the comic.
I am somewhat stumped. Someone like Natalie Portman but less well-known perhaps?

7. Sir Reginal Hargreeves, aka The Monocle: Male, age non-specific probably 40-50's, a wealthy entrepreneur and inventor and Father to the Academy, however he is emotionally distant with them. He is also an alien.
Liam Neeson? I have no idea.

Voice Talent:
8. Dr Pogo: Male Voice talent for a talking chimpanzee. Intelligent offsider to The Monocle, he continues to assist the Academy after his death.
I don't know why I keep thinking John Cleese.

Supporting Roles:
9. Inspector Lupo: Male, age non-specific probably 40-50's. Friend of the Academy and police officer. Sort of their Commissioner James Gordon and looks the part. In the comic he has a moustache.
Gary Oldman would be the obvious choice. Probably too obvious.

10. Mrs Hargreeves: Female, age non-specific. Mother to the academy, a partially animated mannequin, who is nurturing but physically incomplete.
The fangirl in me wants Christina Ricci even though she's probably too young.

11. The Conductor: Male, Villain. Leader of an orchestra of murderous musicians with an intent to end the world. Not really "all there".
An opportunity for a great character actor. Favourite nutty villians anyone?

12. Terminal, Male, Villain. Seen in flashback, he had a terminal illness and invented a killing machine to keep himself alive. Has a run in with a young Allison Hargreeves.
Another great villian opportunity. Only featured briefly so possibly a cameo for someone awesome?

13. The Academy as Children: The film will also feature Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Ben Hargreeves (the seventh member of the Umbrella Academy) as 10 year olds and thus will need a strong young cast to fill these roles.
Probably would end up being unknowns, but are there any fantastic child actors you've noticed that can play 10?

Your opinions are gold. This post isn't friends-locked so please send any would-be interested parties this way.

This may or may not have something to do with a fic I may or may not be writing. *whistles innocently*

He may be too old now, but I could see Asa Butterfield (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm2633535/) (Mordred from Merlin) as Number 5. As for the rest, I suck at casting anything. But I like some of your picks. :)
ext_399013: (gee whats that over there)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn girl how did you do that? Kodi was the only one of my choices I was sure of - but Asa is the kid from The Boy In The Striped Pajamas! He is rather amazing and incredibly suitable. He's also one year younger than Kodi, though I think they can both play younger.

It's a good thing I'm not an actual casting director if I get stumped this easily. Thanks for the great suggestion.

The Kraken -- James Franco?

White Violin -- Sophia Miles

Klaus -- Mads Mikkelsen

IDK, I feel like I need to go think about this some more.

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
James Franco would NEVER have occurred to me! I worry that he is too pretty. Perhaps if he was dirtied up a bit, more unkempt perhaps. (Hmm. Apparently google image searches entitled "james franco unkempt" don't produce fabulous results)

Sophia Miles is an interesting choice, she definitely has the eyes for it.

I've never heard of Mads Mikkelsen but, well YUM. I may have to "research" him further.

I would love to play but I suck at this game. My mum's always trying to play this game with books but I tend to just cast David Wenham as everyone and then give up.
ext_399013: (frankie and gee adorkable)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god I LOVE David Wenham so much. All through Australia whenever he would do an awesome nasty line I'd be all *sigh* "I think I have to marry him." He is so so great.

I spent most of 300 going DUDE WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU? Because if you put the way he looked in Gettin' Square and 300 next to each other it's like two completely different people. And that VOICE he used! Oh how I laughed.

[identity profile] halfeatenmoon.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
300 was awful. It's like he couldn't decide which accent to use and decided to use all of them interchangeably. But aside from that one time he kicks ass.

But, I have no other ideas for handy actors. I think I just don't watch enough movies. The only movie I saw last year that really stuck in my memory was Whip It! and I saw that twice. Ellen Paige is kind of young for any of the Umbrella Academy characters though.

TUA talk! I'm entirely too giddy!!

[identity profile] equinescientist.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, Liam Neeson as the Monocle and Gary Oldman as Lupo?! *gives you a great big hug* And here I thought I wouldn't want a single big-name actor in the movie.

I like John Cleese (well, I just like John Cleese, ha!) for Pogo. You're brilliant!

Kraken needs someone handsome like Jackman, but with a skosh of Denis Leary attitude.

Crispin Glover for Séance?

Oh, I DO hope they pick someone good to play Number Five. I do love him so. Kraken should be my favorite because I obsessively love love LOVE knives and he's that bad boy every girl stereotypically falls for (and he's got the right hair color and everything, bwahahaha!), but Number Five is who I really like.

I have a candidate for Mr. Pennycrumb... *giggles*

Re: TUA talk! I'm entirely too giddy!!

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I love John Cleese too - I just worry that putting someone so good at comedy in the role of Dr Pogo would somehow undermine his authority, like we're trying to make the talking chimp the comic relief, which he definitely isn't. I don't know why but I can't help thinking Dr Pogo has an English accent. My other thought was Michael Caine! I know, right? WTF!

Kraken needs someone handsome like Jackman, but with a skosh of Denis Leary attitude.

This is SPOT ON what I'm thinking.

Crispin Glover you say? I totally get where you are coming from there but I wonder if he's too old though? (and also isn't he clearly insane? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALapHYNSmoA)

Number Five is definitely my favourite character. Probably because I see a lot of Gerard in him.

I haven't read Dallas yet, so I'm not up with Mr Pennycrumb. *smacks self* obviously I'm not as well researched as I should be!

Re: TUA talk! I'm entirely too giddy!!

[identity profile] equinescientist.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, you're right. We don't want to make a mockery out of Pogo. He is far too dignified for that.

Ok, so maybe Crispin Glover is a bad idea. I mean, I like the movie Willard, but he even scares me in that one...and he's supposed to be the good guy! No, Klaus doesn't scare me. I rather like Klaus, so I think I need to think this through some more. (And yes, Crispin Glover is lacking in the sanity department.)

I think I adore #00.05 so much for the very same reason. I want to adopt him. My own little 10-year-old 60-year-old son...

YOU HAVEN'T READ DALLAS YET?! Go now. Speak not to me until you have. (BTW, the puppy in my icon is Mr. Pennycrumb.)

[identity profile] bebunny.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
ooooh hoo hoo, oh boy.

um. I need to think about that.....

hard.

[identity profile] villiagegreen.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
ooooooh comic books... always my weakness.

i shall start a campaign for my beloved Zooey Deschanel for Allison.

I want to see her play someone her own age for once plus she has a very lovely raspy soft voice for all that magic voice mojo.

also i would like to see ryan ward off stage and on screen as klaus. he's got a sharp sense of timing and look at his widdle face.

Image

what?

yes i know the book.

DON'T JUDGE ME.
ext_399013: (frankies pubes)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow Zooey is like precisely the right age! She has such gorgeous fragile eyes to go with her magic voice. *tries to picture her with purple hair* OH MAN I AM SO CONFUSED NOW.

Who is this Ryan Ward? He is SMOKING. Oh my god HIS CHIN. HIS JAW. He even has Klaus' floppy hair. This deserves further thought. Yes. Hmm. Yes.

HOW CAN I JUDGE YOU? I have it too! Though I pretended it was for "RESEARCH". Very Important Research.

[identity profile] villiagegreen.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You want zooey...want her... Yes.

Ryan has been in a handfull of indie flicks, but he is mostly known for playing 'ash' in 'evil dead: the musical' in Canada and on broadway. I got to see him in the Toronto production and he is charming as all get out. He is also used to getting thrown around and covered in blood and fighting evil and general insanity.

Also when you go home YouTube the song 'what the fuck was that?' it features slashy tango dancing.

Mmm Ryan, look at you in my icon all coated in ex girlfriend blood... Huggles?
ext_399013: (Frankie guitar sex)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry can we go back to the fact that there is an Evil Dead musical? EEHHHHH?

Fighting evil and general insanity seems befitting of Klaus. Now he just needs to make some jokes that show he is clearly insane and we're all set.

SLASHY TANGO DANCING??? You give the best presents.

Ahahaha. Ryan is all WTF BLOOD???

[identity profile] villiagegreen.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He spends 10 minutes on stage fighting his right hand and a talking moose head, the smiles and wishes the hand that kept him company all those Friday nights good luck and good bye before cutting it off.

I think he is covered.

I can link when I get home, Ash/Scottie = zombie love.

Ryan, you doll, BE IN MOVIES.

[identity profile] villiagegreen.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
here is some ryan tangoing in the first production, it's shotty as hell, but it has the hugging and queer leaping.

[identity profile] bebunny.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, maybe Milla Jovovich for Vanya?

David Thewlis for Inspector Lupo

Kevin Kline for The Monocle?

The Rumour is hard, I am thinking someone initially (but not always homely) like Jewel Staite?

Klaus stumps me, because if a sequel was made and they did Dallas he'd have to be perfect. Perhaps Crispin Glover?

[identity profile] bebunny.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
also, you know if she didnt mind not being a sex goddess for the movie then Gillian Anderson could be wonderful as Mrs Hargreeves, she's an incredible actress and I see this character as a very difficult one to play.
ext_399013: (frankie stop that you tool)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
GILLIAN ANDERSON YESSSSSSSSS!

She so would be awesome for Mrs Hargreeves. Something about this is incredibly right.
ext_399013: (umbrella academy)

[identity profile] ladyfoxxx.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhh mannnnn Milla. I would sleep with her so hard. Vanya is such a difficult role, I hate to ask but do you think she'd be up to it?

David Thewlis has a great crazyface. I don't think I've seen him in anything but from pictures I look at him and think "The Conductor". Am I way off base here?

Kevin Kline! He can so rock a moustache! As long as he's not too comical looking in it.

Aw don't you go throwing Jewel Staite at me! *firefly geeklove flail* Aww she was my faaaaves in that show.

That's two suggestions for Crispin Glover for Klaus. I really think the age thing kills it for me though. It's possible also that I find Klaus kind of hot and want a real hottie to play him.

[identity profile] bebunny.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
David Thewlis? He could play the tortured inspector well, darker figure, too little sleep. He has been in so much stuff! Dragonheart, The Island of Dr Moreau, Total Eclipse, Harry Potter...

See the bad guy...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_ZvuBjpSQs

that was a good 12-15 years ago now too...

he cant do comedy though, not the conductor, not nearly unhinged enough, he does quiet, calculating bad guy, exuding danger and whatnot. God his voice!

Milla? Yeah i reckon she could, she can do slightly manic, and sulky...

[identity profile] equinescientist.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
See?! I wasn't the only one who thought of Crispin Glover for Klaus! (However, still does not make Crispin any less crazy...)
