Hi Darren. Gosh it's nice to see you looking so goddamn happy. This is Darren's contribution to the It Gets Better Project. He's so incredibly earnest and heartfelt and adorable. I want to hug him until he squeaks.

I imagine all my bandom friends are wondering what the hell he's doing on their flist. Well Savage Garden was my first great fandom love years ago, back in the days before Darren came out and used to write non gender specific songs to be mysterious. I have written far too much smut about this man. That aside, no one was surprised when he finally came out and married the love of his life Richard and even though I'm not into his solo stuff in quite the same way I used to be into SG, it makes me glee to see him out and happy and sharing the It Gets Better message.

Thank you so much for posting this! Man, I can't believe how distant Darren seems to me now, whereas once upon a time (TEN years ago?) he was pretty much all I thought about. I, too, wasn't a huge fan of his solo work and I don't even own his latest album(s), but something about him still makes me smile whenever I see him express himself. I still identify with him on such a profound level. He was a crucial figure in me realizing exactly who I was and I'm so happy that he can still be that person to countless others. Wonderful.

Me too! It reminds me of all the reasons I started writing him, how passionate and expressive he gets, and yet he's also so vulnerable - because opening yourself up like that makes you vulnerable. I'm so glad he's in such a good place now and there's a really soft place for him in my heart always.

BTW, I also lost all interest in writing slash about him once he stopped being all ambiguous and such. It's like I absolutely wanted him to just come out of the closet already, but it turns out I didn't actually WANT him to, LOL. Oh how I do miss his old lyrics and his old flamboyant style... gay Darren = boring Darren.

But also happy Darren! *hugs you too* You were the first person whose slash fics I ever read and thus played a major part in me becoming an active (obsessive, really) part of the fandom. When I think of you, I feel happily nostalgic :)

I know what you mean! It stopped being fun to slash him when he came out, I don't even know why. I do miss his crazy old campy ways.

i've got a bit of cultural cringe about savage garden i have to admit, but i have always liked him as a person. and then he was so great about things whenever he was interviewed or whatever and somewhere along the line i developed a soft spot for him! strange!

I used to get SG culture cringe, but then I got over it. They are from my hometown (I'm a Logan Bogan) so that gets them points in my book and even if their music is poppier than my usual, I really love the songs lyrically. And you're right, he's a total sweetheart in interviews and stuff. I'm happy to see him so happy! <3

Oh I'm nice and confusing - I'm an Aussie currently living in the UK, which explains why you had me pegged as a Brit. Plus I've been squealing about the MCR London shows, that would make me sound rather British, I'm sure.

Mmmm I must admit, I hung in there for Strange Relationship and then kind of stopped listening. But I still listen to SG all the time. *le sigh*

Just got around to watching this. He rly is adorable, pinchable, loveable!! What he said about that thing that made him special--his talents--were the thing that singled him out and made him a target made me so sad. :( Loved how grounded he seemed, though!

Yes, but after. Like, once he figured it out, he didn't try to hide it but I remember, back when I first saw pictures of SG, when I first heard of them, I thought Darren was gay and was verily confused when people said, 'Oh no, he's married. To a woman!' It was very confusing. To him too, apparently. *snort*
