21 Down: Not Out

Gerard heaved, knuckles whitening as his fingers tightened around the seat of the toilet. His stomach churned, and his brow was dripping with sweat: day five of going cold turkey, and he was regretting the side-effects more than the lack of alcohol or drugs. He groaned, and spat into the bowl, before slumping back onto the floor.

Frank came in, nose wrinkled prematurely against the acrid smell in the small bus bathroom.

“You okay, Gee?” he asked, passing the older man a glass of water and crouching down by his shoulder.

Gerard took a couple of grateful gulps, and gave Frank a weak smile. “Yeah, you know me, Frankie. Down but not out.”
