“No worries,” Ray says and there aren’t really. There’s still a jitter under his skin; an echo of that panicked anticipation and moment of startled wakefulness that came with hearing his cell ring, but its fading fast in the face of Mikey’s unshakeable calm. “What’s up?”

“You made me waffles,” Mikey says and Ray blinks.

“I made you waffles?” he echoes, nonplussed. It doesn’t get any clearer with the repetition.

“Yeah,” Mikey says, “That’s why we’re cool.”

Ray frowns. It is too freaking late to be translating Mikey-speak. Or too early. Whichever it is, he is definitely not awake enough for this conversation. “You want to explain that one for me, Mikeyway?” he asks quietly.

Mikey’s smile is evident in his voice, “For every dick thing you said to me back then, you always made me waffles in the morning. So, I knew it was about the music and not about me. I just wanted to tell you that’s why we’re cool.” There’s a brief hesitation, just a flicker of a second before Mikey adds, “So no more apologies, okay?”

“Fuck,” It slips out before Ray has a chance to bite his tongue; Mikey’s offhand dismissal, his easy forgiveness of Ray’s shitty, shitty behaviour, hitting him like a solid left hook to the gut, “Jesus, Mikey. Fucking waffles? How does that even come close to making up for the shit I pulled with you on that album?”

Mikey’s shrug is almost audible, “It was enough for me,” he says simply and Ray could cry at the easy acceptance in Mikey’s voice of things that shouldn’t be easy to take. Except he’s been trying not to be that guy so much either.

“You’re too good to us,” he says instead because he never wants to stop being that guy and Mikey snorts.

“You sound like Gee when you’re tired,” he says, “Go back to sleep. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Yeah, okay,” Ray says easily, like he hasn’t realised he’s letting Mikey get away with changing the subject. It’s deliberate; there are better times for this kind of conversation than the middle of the night when he’s still sleep-addled and barely-conscious and Mikey always forgets that Ray isn’t Gerard. Ray is the one who remembers in the morning, especially when the talk’s about something that’s worth holding on to. Ray’s pretty certain there’s nothing about Mikey that isn’t worth that, even if it seems Mikey doesn’t see it that way.

It can wait though. Besides, in one way, Mikey’s right. He does need to get back to sleep; he’s got an early start looming.

After all, there are waffles to be made.

There is no way this comment is going to be coherent, I was supposed to go to sleep HOURS ago, but I just had to say WOW and AGH and OMG <333333333333

I love this. I LOVE this. From the moment I finished reading that interview I I've been DESPERATE for fic about Ray's apology and HERE IT IS. And is SO thoughtful and sweet and fitting. I LOVE that Mikey forgets that Ray will remember in the morning, I LOVE that Ray is still carrying this around after all these years and I LOVE that waffles make everything okay.

This fic is like a great big warm hug and I want to twirl it around and take it out to dinner and buy it flowers.

I think everybody (including me) wanted to see apology-fic. I still think someone ought to write a huge mega-epic all about it. I just wanted to write Mikey being a bit spacey and Ray being all flaily...
