Once a Queenslander, always a Queenslander

I'm sure you've all heard by now about [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction. I don't know how many of you know that Brisbane is my hometown, but it is. It's somewhat surreal to be in London seeing the news reports roll in about how three quarters of my home state is underwater. To see photos and footage of streets I used to walk down, places I used to shop, bridges I've crossed, places I've lived and worked - destroyed and waterlogged.

Eagle Street in Brisbane City. When I was fresh out of high school I used to go clubbing here, and I have memories of sitting on the steps (which are underwater in this photo) eating shitty fast food after being out all night. They did craft markets on the weekends.

This is Southbank. It's parkland that was built on the old site of World Expo 88. I used to park my car in the underground car park and take the City Cat across the river to my first job at QUT. I've drunk wine coolers in the park at Southbank with friends and done Karaoke in the bars there. It's also the home of the Lyric theatre, where I've seen and participated in performances and the museum where the dinosaurs are.

The Brisbane River. In the bottom corner you can see my old university.

I can't really express how upsetting it is to see these familiar sights looking so unfamiliar.

My family and friends back home so far are okay - lucky enough to live on high enough ground, thank god, but that doesn't change just how many people have become homeless from this - and how much work lies ahead with cleanup and rebuilding the socalled sunshine state.

So I'm putting myself up for auction to try to raise money for this cause. My thread is here. I'm offering a minimum of 2k of fic, bidders choice.

I know I still have outstanding debts from a previous auction - I'm working on those right now, just so you know. I couldn't not participate in this, it's too close to home - literally and symbolically.

If anyone else is participating in the auction please let me know - I'm ready to bid.

Auction closes on the 26th of January. Porn for a cause people. Happy bidding!

HI-YAH! I am ninja where porn helping people is concerned.
I think it was those stranded horses that won me over.

My heart. IT'S HUGE! :)

my facebook is full of friends who have spent the weekend covered in mud helping on clean up efforts. makes my heart very full. some of the photos are bewildering. entire streets of houses literally covered in silt. the streets full of debris... difficult to really get my mind around.

*hugs*

I was just checking Facebook earlier and a mate of mine was talking about making sandwiches for the mud brigade volunteers. Makes me feel so warm. The real tell for me with this disaster has been the amazing attitude of the people down in it, just stepping up and getting on with it. And good on them.

*hugs right back*

Thanks babe. I've come out of it so totally unscathed and other the other side of the world no less so whatever I'm feeling has got nothing on the guys who are actually down in it - but it's amazing how people right around the world are aware and doing their part. ♥

I'm still shocked by how much flooding has happened. Seeing those pictures with your comments makes it feel even more real. If I hadn't already done my donations I'd bid on you.

Good on you for having already donated!

Seeing those pictures online was what made it real for me, so I guess I felt compelled to pass it down. Cleanup is in progress and it hasn't rained for something like 5 days now so it's on the up and up. Can't keep us Queenslanders down!

I can't even imagine how it'd feel to see some of my hometown flooded like this. More than willing to donate, of course. Just a quick question, on your thread do I click 'reply to this' or just 'post comment'?

Clare, (girl I was with at the gig in October) has been in Brisbane since November and she's been keeping me updated. She's on high ground and she's still managing to get on Facebook (never thought I'd thank facebook for something) so I'm not worried for her. Just everyone else! She's been helping out with her bf and telling me how people are taking it all in stride and so reacting positively. Gotta admire that.
